How long to pay off the deficit?

One of many assumptions we’re not being invited to question is the BBC’s decision to pay off the deficit in the fund in 10 years. Why? There’s no explanation. The Royal Mail has just proposed paying off it’s deficit in 35 years (admittedly the pension’s regulator is far from happy). But BT (which has the biggest private sector deficit in the country) is paying off it’s deficit over 17 years. I’d love to know what difference that would make to the BBC pension fund. There are so many unexplored assumptions, and we’re being rushed into abandoning our benefits before any of them can be properly explored.
